Due to its geographical proximity to the various Asian
countries, Kagoshima Prefecture has long played
the important role of being a
gateway to other countries by engaging in
cultural exchange and trade with China, Korea and the South-east
Asian countries, as well as introducing firearms and Christianity to
Japan. With this long history of international
exchange, Kagoshima has, at present,
exchange programmes with Georgia in the
United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jeollabuk-do in the
Republic of Korea, Jiangsu Province in China and many other Asian
countries.
The Exchange Plaza of the Kagoshima International Association,
officially opened in 1990, serves as an important meeting point for
Kagoshima's citizens and foreign nationals. In addition, the Kagoshima
Asia-Pacific Intercultural Countryside Centre (KAPIC), a residential
training facility opened in 1994, is widely used by both foreign
residents in Japan and trainees from overseas.
Furthermore, Kagoshima has had a long history of its children leaving
for the lands of North and South America since the Meiji Period. These
immigrants set up various Kenjinkai associations and Kagoshima
associations in their new homes to foster unity between people from the
same prefecture and these associations have contributed greatly to
exchange efforts with Kagoshima.
