(The Hakata Shin-Yatsushiro Shinkansen Line is due to be completed by the spring of 2011)

Hisatsu Orange Railways

  • This railway is a third-sector railway running between Kumamoto and Kagoshima, and began operations on 13 Mar. 2004.
  • The railway stretches 116.9 km from Sendai Station (Kagoshima) to Yatsushiro Station (Kumamoto), linking a total of 28 stations.
  • There are 35 daily round-trip services between Sendai and Izumi; and 22 daily round-trip direct services between Sendai and Yatsushiro
  • During the weekends and public holidays, direct services from Kagoshima Chuo to Izumi; and from Kumamoto to Izumi are available (2 daily round-trip services).

The name is derived from the many orange groves that line the railway. During the summer, the East China Sea just next to the railway line bustle with sea bathers; the sunset viewed from the train carriages is a romantic sight to behold and popular with couples.

Along the railway line are the plains of Izumi, well-known for some 10,000 cranes that flock to Izumi from Sibera or China during winter each year.

The hotels and Japanese inns along the railway line are also known for adding peels from freshly harvested mandarin oranges into the hot baths to create citrus baths for their guests.

We highly recommend a journey on this train for travellers who prefer a relaxing ride while enjoying scenery that has remained unchanged since the days of old.
