Camphor tree (Prefectural Tree)

There is a natural forest of camphor trees on Shiroyama Hill Kagoshima City.

The Giant Camphor Tree in the Hachiman shrine in Kamo Town has a circumference of 33 meters around the root.

It has been recorded as the biggest tree in Japan.

Miyama Kirishima Azaleas(Prefectual Flower)

A variety of azaleas unique to Kyushu, this flower flourishes mainly near the peaks of volcanos such as those in Mt. Kirishima, Mt. Aso, Mt. Kuju, and Mt. Unzen.

Yakushima Rhododendron

   

Yaku Cedar (Yaku Sugi)

Cedars on Yakushima 1,000 years old and older are called "Yaku Sugi".

The most famous tree, Jomon Sugi, is estimated to be 7,200 years old.


Bamboo

Kagoshima Prefecture is renowned for bamboo production, with wide use of bamboo since ancient times in tool-making, construction, and foods.

Mangrove

The mangrove forests are found in the estuary area of Sumiyou River and the River consisting mostly black mangroves,red mangroves, and Sakishima Sappanwoods.

Banyan


This large evergreen can be seen on and to the south of Tanegashima and Yakushima. The largest Banyan in Japan, with height of 7 meters, trunk circumstance of 6.33 meters and branch span of 22 meters, is found at Kunigami Elementary School in Wadomari Town in Okinoerabu Island.

   
 
Coral Tree (Prefectural Tree)

The Coral Tree, the prefectural tree, is a deciduous tree originally from Brazil.

The smaller branches are covered with thorns, and from summer through fall scarlet flowers arc on bloom.
