Kagoshima utilizes its abundant land and warm climate to
produce a wide variety of distinctive citrus fruits, including Ponkan
and Tankan oranges, Kumquats, Red summer oranges, Shiranui (Citrus sp),
loquats and a variety of tropical fruits including mangoes.
The fruit orchards in Kagoshima cover an area totalling 4,990 hectares,
and in 2006, generated a profit of 10 billion yen. In 2006, the
cultivation area for the Ponkan, Tankan oranges and passion fruits was
ranked number one in Japan. The cultivation area for Kinkan and Biwa
was ranked number two, while mango was ranked number three.
