Ishibashi Memorial Park
There used to be five large arched stone bridges
spanning the Koutsuki River as it flowed through the center of
Kagoshima City. The bridges were nameed the Tamae, Shinkan, Nishida,
Kourai and Takeno.
On the 6th of August 1993, torrential rainfall led to a flood in
Kagoshima as the river overflowed its banks, washing away the Takeno
and Shinkan bridges.
In order to preserve the three remaining bridges, they were relocated
when reconstruction works were carried out on the river, and new
bridges were built in their stead. In addition, a commemorative hall
was built to provide information about the history and technique
utilised in the building and maintenance of the arch bridges. Ishibashi
Memorial Park opened in 2000, and it is hoped that it will help
familiarise the citizens of Kagoshima with the history of their city,
as well as preserve the bridges for their future generations.
