Due to the warm climate enjoyed by Kagoshima, the production of cut
flowers of such varieties as chrysanthemums, lilies and gladiolus have
flourished, especially around the Amami and Nansatsu regions. Recently,
new varieties like the sea lavender and the leatherleaf ferns have been
introduced and are enjoying some popularity.
In 2006, the planted acreage was 2,356 hectares, 96% of the previous
year’s figure and the yield was worth 19.9 billion yen, 95% of the
previous year’s figure. For the 9 varieties of flowers produced in
2006, the production of gladiolus and spray chrysanthemums for flower
arrangements; and the production of lilies and freesia bulbs in
Kagoshima ranks first in the nation; while the production volume of
ornamental foliage plants ranks second. Kagoshima is one of the top
producers of flowers and trees within Japan.
